Evaluation of Biooxidation to Mitigate Long-Term Dissolution and Mass Discharge of Contaminants from Coal Tar and Creosote

Abstract:

Dissolved-phase remediation strategies (including chemical and biological oxidation) are viable alternatives to enhance NAPL composition change and mitigate long-term dissolution from NAPL at former MGP sites. NAPL dissolution modeling provides some of the information needed to evaluate the duration and costs, and effectiveness of proposed methods. Relatively simple laboratory tests provide data that can be used in conjunction with Raoult’s Law for modeling long-term NAPL dissolution. This approach was applied at a former MGP site and at a creosote-impacted wood treating site. This presentation will describe the laboratory-based NAPL equilibration method, the value of EPRI-developed, microscale analytical methods in the laboratory, and discuss the approach to evaluating NAPL depletion based on the laboratory tests.
