Abstract:

The traditional list of 16 Priority Pollutant PAHs are estimated to constitute less than 0.1% of petroleum.  It is estimated that there are hundreds of forms of alkylated PAHs that are unaccounted for by traditional analysis techniques.  A better determination of the aromatic or PAH component of petroleum contamination can have a significant impact on assessments of the total toxic exposure to PAHs.  Assessments on effects to benthic organisms as well as sediment remediation strategies could all be impacted by a broader assessment of PAH exposure.    A method for the determination of parent PAHs and alkyl substituted PAHs at sub ug/l concentrations is presented.  The protocol also incorporates the analysis of saturated hydrocarbons (alkanes) and biomarkers that can be useful in the additional determinations of sample weathering, sample source and extent of biodegradation on the sample.  Clean-up techniques as well as quality assurance practices to enhance data reliability will also be discussed.
