Abstract:

Continuous monitoring for vibration, movement, noise, air quality, and odors was conducted during remediation at a former Manufactured Gas Plant (MGP) site in an urban environment. This case study presents a comprehensive monitoring program implemented to collect data in support of the evaluation and management of potential risk to nearby buildings and the local community due to excavation, dewatering, and sheet pile driving construction activities and to human health due to exposed contaminated soils during remediation. Automated real-time monitoring for vibration and noise was conducted at the site perimeter, automated real-time monitoring for volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in air and dust was conducted at the site perimeter; crack gauges and survey targets were placed on adjacent buildings and monitored weekly; odors were monitored using the n-butanol scale and supplemented with naphthalene measurements using a portable gas chromatograph when odors were elevated. Twenty-four-hour time weighted average VOC samples were collected at the perimeter once per week for laboratory analysis to supplement the real-time air monitoring results. During the project, vibrations were observed at the site perimeter, however no movement was observed at adjacent buildings. Minor levels of VOCs or dust were detected at the site perimeter, and control measures were implemented to effectively maintain concentrations below the site-specific Action Limits.
