Abstract:

AECOM has been designing, installing and operating perimeter/fenceline ambient air quality and meteorological programs for more than 40 years.  AECOM’s more recent experience includes numerous perimeter air monitoring programs around hazardous waste sites, refineries, landfill excavation projects, dredging and sediment processing remediation projects, building demolition projects, and former Manufactured Gas Plant (MGP) and Hex Chrome (Cr6) remediation projects.  AECOM’s air monitoring programs typically range from the very conservative, multi-tiered approach to the much less conservative design and styles. This presentation will focus on and present information and comparisons concerning the various approaches AECOM has encountered in the design and operation of site remediation perimeter air monitoring programs.  The various system designs and operational approaches to be discussed will be based on programs designed and operated by AECOM under the scrutiny of the various regulatory agencies overseeing the site-specific remediation activities.    The presentation will focus on the various design specification and operational protocol comparisons, with an assessment and emphasis on the various advantages and disadvantages of each perimeter air monitoring approach. The following design and operational comparisons will be discussed:  monitoring and data quality objectives; site characterization and parameters measured; parameter-specific Action Levels; available types of instrumentation; data telemetry/ Action Level alarms; frequency of sampling/length of monitoring programs; number and placement of monitoring locations; and cost of perimeter monitoring program.
